Ideas and ThemesThe pupils took every opportunity to explore their imagination with this project. The idea started with moss. The pupils had made a site visit to a bog and discovered that sphagnum moss is the most viable plant for space travel, due to its ability to absorb water. This information was explored further through various artistic methods. Imagining being the first group of humans to populate Mars soon became the theme.

Finished PieceThe resulting installed artwork took the from of a monolith community dwelling made entirely from salvaged pieces of wood which sits on a bed of gathered moss. This represents the students vision of a future on planet mars. The base stone decoration pays homage to Kerbstone 1, in Newgrange, County Meath. The pupils involved took complete ownership of their finished piece and invited each class in the school out to explore the artwork and hosted an open discussion about their theme. This project enabled the pupils to explore an abstract idea in a creative way.
