Ideas and themesThe town itself has a deep connection to the famine with evidence echoed in local landmarks, buildings and historical figures. An initial field trip was used as a tool to explore these locations, with the pupils taking preliminary notes and documenting the area. The pupils developed the idea to create characters through creative writing, and bring them to life using the locations visited as backdrops for performative interventions. The characters created were documented with photography and then digitally manipulated. The resulting video footage was also edited and made into a short film.

Finished PieceThe resulting project was realized with an exhibition in the school, with all pupils, teachers and parents being invited to explore the artwork. The students involved in this project became young historians through art. Inviting the wider audience of the school and parents to view the work created a memorable connection with the project.
